Last night, we held our seventh annual Movie Premiere where we debuted the masterpiece: The Pre-K Movie. Our stars arrived in their fancy garb, walked the red carpet, had their picture taken by the paparazzi, ate pizza and popcorn, and even received their very own 3D printed Oscars. We could not be more proud of all of the creativity and hard work this class put into this movie!
Welcome to The Wonder Jewelry Shop. A couple of days before our Thanksgiving Break a few of the children started making paper purses in the art studio. What began as one or two a day soon became a mass production. When they realized they had such a large number of purses, they decided that the best thing to do was to open a store. The shelves in the science lab were cleared off, and stocking merchandise began. A few children suggested other accessories that might be sold in the shop, though purses continued to be the main attraction.
When we returned to school six days later, merchandise production went back into full swing. As soon as the store was named, the very fancy sign seen above was designed and posted by the “door.” Two cash registers, an old keyboard, two old phones, and a mouse were added so the store employees could “work.”
One of the children informed us that purses with short or no handles are called bags. These were placed directly on the shelf for display. The longer handled purses are displayed on the walls of the shop. I wondered aloud how a customer might know how much to pay for a purse. So far the consensus is that whoever is selling the purse will just tell you how much it costs.
I was informed today that the Wonder Jewelry Store will have a Grand Opening at 2:00 on Thursday. I’m not yet sure what this entails as the spokesperson did not give me any details. Although, in the last three minutes of class, I did hear a rumor that lipstick might be on sale soon!

I just found another clip on Seesaw. This one was obviously designed as a commercial. Note, adults did not have anything to do with the recording. The children use our class iPad to document their learning and share it with their parents. Near the end, you can hear an adult nearby suggesting that jewelry and purses are not actually gender bound. Our voice-over artist isn’t so sure. Sounds like a great place to start a discussion.
An unusual box arrived today. Curiosity and excitement are bubbling out the door and down the hall. What could be inside?
A hamster in a cage, because I saw one once.
A turtle because ___ put his finger in and he said something bit him. It must be a turtle.
I think it’s a stuffed cat. Stuffed cats come to your house in a box like that.
Glass because you said that it is fragile and can’t get hot or cold.
A turtle because that’s what some other people said.
A real cat. When kittens came to my house, they came in a box.
We tried listening to the box for clues. Unfortunately, we didn’t hear anything that might give us clues.
Everyone wrote down their ideas using one of our Feely Box Friday forms. The top says, “I think it is a________.” We use the bottom to write about what we actually find.
Finally, we opened the box. Its contents were not what we expected. Inside we found bugs! In fact, there were four containers of them. The bugs are very small and a few of the children were a bit nervous that they might be poisonous. I quickly assured them that I would never invite a dangerous bug into our school. The package also contained some white fuzzy things, two little Petri dishes with what appear to be seeds, and some sort of crispy, hard thing that reminded the children of a butterfly “cocoon.” I’ve set up all of these items in an observable space so we can keep an eye on them. Our little scientists are looking forward to watching this drama unfold.
Oh my! I can’t believe it’s this time of year already. We began creating stories for our script early in January and have now come down to what I think will be our final direction. This in no way ensures that changes won’t be made. In fact, if history has taught us anything in Pre-K, the characters are sure to change in these last two weeks of writing. Remember, this story is written by the Pre-K students. You’ll find all sorts of silliness and that is just the way we like it. Here is a copy of our draft thus far. We’ll figure out a title, change the format to look more like a play, and begin planning costumes and sets once we return from Spring Break.
Once upon a time, there were 2 little pigeons playing basketball. Two Big Baby Ducklings came along and said, “What are you doing?” Then the 2 pigeons ran into their house. The BBDs were very hungry and now they were grumpy. They tried to blow down the house.
2 police officers came. “Halt!” They captured the 2 BBDs and took them to the police car.
The 2 pigeons decide to watch tv. They were watching The Pigeon on the bus.

Pigeon decides to drive somewhere and get some mac and cheese. Then pigeon gets dressed in blue stuff. Then she puts on some make-up. She has to go to an important meeting with her friend Red Panda. They drive to the meeting.
Penguin, Rainbow Spring, and Grape are at the meeting. They are talking about work. (work talk). Rainbow Spring and Grape accidentally end the meeting by being too silly. Penguin, Red Panda, and Pigeon get back on the bus and leave. After they drive for a while, they stop and go to sleep.

The 2 pigeons go back out to play basketball again. Everyone that isn’t BBDs or police slowly comes over and says, “Can we play, too?”
Then they all get tired and fall asleep in a heap.
The police officers drive the BBDs to jail. The BBDs say, “We just wanted some food!” “O.K.,” says the police, “we have a cage that can help you with that!” The cage is made out of bananas, so the BBDs eat the banana jail. The police say, “We’ll drive you back if you say please.” The BBDs say, “Please drive us back.” The police drive them back to the pigeons’ home.
Everyone was inside when they arrived. The BBDs knock on the pigeons’ door. “Who’s there?” says the pigeons. “The BBDs, can we please have some food?” replied the ducklings. “Sure!” said the pigeons, “Here’s an apple.” “Come in guys, we have some yummy food in here.” “You can have as much as you want.”
I recently added some foam corners, left over from packaging, to the construction zone. I thought they might make for an interesting addition to buildings. As is usually the case, the children had much grander plans. Requesting something to stick into the foam, I provided them with craft sticks. Delighted, I watched as they proceeded to impale the sticks into the sides, using them to attach pieces together. Many creations came from these experiments, yet somehow I only managed to capture this one on film.
The child who made this eagerly explained his design and wished to display it in the class. He then wrote a label so anyone visiting would understand his sculpture.
A while ago, one of the students posed a curious question about what happens to the water after it rains. We discussed many possibilities, but eventually came to the conclusion that somehow it ended up in the clouds. One of the most creative methods for this molecular travel was via invisible pipes in the trees that carry the water from the ground to the sky.
This week, we read more information about where water goes and how it travels. The water cycle made sense, but it was still a bit confusing. Hmmm…maybe a little music can help?
