How was school today?

With the exciting start to the school year, parents are eager to hear how their child/ren are enjoying their new classrooms and what adventures they are embarking on each day. Unfortunately, getting a young child to express any of these thoughts and feelings at the end of a long day can be like pulling teeth. How often have you experienced the following situation?

Parent: “How was your day at school?”
Child: “Good.” or “Fine.”
Parent: “What did you do?”
Child: “Nothing.” or “I don’t remember.”

End of conversation.

Next time your child comes home from school, try some of the phrases below and see how the conversation flourishes!

#1. What was the best thing that happened at school today?

#2. Tell me something that made you laugh today.

#3. If you could choose, who would you like to sit by in class?

#4. Where is the coolest place at the school?

#5. Tell me a silly word that you heard today.

#6. If I called your teacher tonight what would she tell me about you?

#7. How did you help somebody today?

#8. How did somebody help you today?

#9. Tell me one thing that you learned today.

#10. When were you the happiest today?
